Sabrina Chapman

Fresh A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to present Grandmother's Curtains, mixed media installation by Sabrina Chapman.

An opening reception with the artist will take place on Wednesday October 8, 2008 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm. The exhibit will continue through October 31. The reception is free and open to the public.

The exhibit "Grandmother's Curtains" encompasses a tragic story which hit Sabrina Chapman's family about a year ago. Her sister, who is bipolar, was poorly medicated by a state agency and was struggling with alcoholism, was in a house fire. It was her grandparent’s house. She was badly burned and the house burnt to the ground. A lot of memories that were lost. Her Grandmother always had the most beautiful curtains. She remembers the way the white shears would play against the rays of light coming through the bay window.

Sabrina Chapman's art is about time, process, material, the aesthetic form, sentimental nostalgia, composition, deeper questioning. She organizes objects collected into 2 and 3 dimensional forms. She finds these objects in her dad’s basement, grandmother’s attic, garage sales, thrift stores, even street markets in Paris and Madrid. She identifies with these objects; in pieces scattered over the world, she finds the pieces of herself.

Carefully compiling compositions of found objects to awaken and encourage the viewer to question the objects he or she engages with in his or her life as well as arouse a multitude of deeper questioning.

ArtPerk.com

ArtPerk.com is a new website for artists seeking to locate display opportunities and gallery openings. ArtPerk lists opportunities throughout the nation and offers unique features to help artists find show opportunities in a quick, user-friendly way.

Artists seeking shows to enter now have the ability to search for opportunities by media (nice for sculptors and photographers, sometimes not allowed in jurored shows), by location (if you're partial to show your work only near your home), and other search parameters.

ArtPerk also allows users to save their searches and receive daily or weekly e-mails with those search results as reminders. The site is free for artists to search and for galleries and venues to post. Galleries can create listings for a fee if they'd like front page placement and other advantages.

The owners of the site will add new features weekly, including new types of opportunities such as jobs and residencies for artists, and articles on business and marketing.

Based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, ArtPerk is owned by the photographers and web design specialists at DoubleShot Studio, LLC of Gaithersburg, MD and is located on the Internet at ArtPerk.com.

The Greater Columbus Arts Council has partenered with Artspace Projects, a Minneapolis-based national, nonprofit developer, to study the space needs or the creative community in the Columbus area.

The study will assist in the development of affordable space where artists may live and work, and where arts organizations and creative busines my thrive.

To take part in this survey visit www.columbusartspace.org. The survey will be online until May 20, 2008. Don't miss your chance to be heard!

ArtCycle Project
Columbia Art League's Art in the Park

Columbia, MO
June 7 and 8, 2008
Deadline - May 23, 2008

At this year's Golden Jubilee Art in the Park in Columbia, Missouri, art and cycling are going tandem, with a new art project called ArtCycle: a competitive art project with a $1000 top prize. ArtCycles are defined as working bicycles transformed into works of art. The bicycles should
still be rideable, have anywhere from 1 to 3 wheels, and be weatherproof, other than that, the only bounds are each artist's creativity. Alongside the competitively entered ArtCycles, ten local artists have been commissioned to create their own ArtCycles, which will all be launched at Columbia's Bike Walk & Wheel Week from 3-10 May. The ten commissioned ArtCycles and the winners from the ArtCycle competition will all be placed around the city to create a public art project through the summer.

There is no cost to enter an ArtCycle either in the competition or the parade. Any questions, should be sent to Diana Moxon at artleague@centurytel.net or by phone to 573-443-8838. Click here to download an entry form and obtain more information about the event.
